Sirens sign Maja Nylen Persson to one-year contract extension

One of the top Europeans in women’s hockey is sticking around the Big Apple for a little while longer.
On Monday, the New York Sirens announced that the team has signed defender Maja Nylén Persson to a one-year contract extension.
Nylén Persson originally signed a three-year contract with New York last July. Her new deal will keep her on the books through the 2027-28 season.
“I’m super excited to extend my contract with the Sirens,” Nylén Persson said in a release. “I can’t wait to continue building and working with the entire organization for many years to come, and of course, playing in front of our amazing fans.”
Nylén Persson was originally taken by New York in the second round, 10th overall, of the 2024 PWHL Draft. She came to North America with high expectations after establishing herself as one of the best blueliners in Europe, regardless of gender. The Avesta, Sweden native won the Salming Trophy as Sweden’s Defenseman of the Year in 2022 while playing for SDHL power Brynäs IF, and was expected to help bring some life to a Sirens team that finished last in the PWHL’s inaugural season.
However, things were tough for the 24-year-old. She never seemed to find her groove with her new squad, as the team stumbled back down the standings to another last-place finish. On top of that, an upper-body injury suffered in the Takeover Tour game in Detroit ended her season, resulting in her not being able to play for Team Sweden at the 2025 IIHF Women’s World Championship.
In 23 games with New York, she scored two goals and four assists for six points, finishing with a plus/minus of -1.
Nylén Persson is expected to be one of the names representing her country at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan in a few months.
The Sirens have been busy as of late, signing top draft picks Kristýna Kaltounková and Anne Cherkowski to three-year contracts. The trio is the only players to have deals going through the 2027-28 campaign.
