Phillip Di Giuseppe, Louis Domingue headline NHL waivers for Oct. 1

A plethora of players have been placed on waivers as training camp cuts continue around the NHL. On Tuesday, 27 players were made available to the rest of the league.

There were a couple of notable names on the list, including Vancouver Canucks forward Phillip Di Giuseppe. The 30-year-old is coming off a 2023-24 season, which saw him play a career-high 51 games, scoring five goals and five assists for 10 points. It is just the fourth time in his eight years in the NHL that Di Giuseppe has hit double digits in points. He also played in 11 of the team’s playoff games last spring, scoring a goal and an assist.

Di Giuseppe has played in 282 NHL games, appearing in games with the Carolina Hurricanes, Nashville Predators and New York Rangers. He has scored 27 goals and 75 points, playing in a total of 14 playoff games.

Louis Domingue looks to be heading back to the minors with the Rangers organization. The veteran netminder came to the Original Six franchise in 2022 but has spent most of the past two seasons with their American Hockey League franchise, the Hartford Wolf Pack. He made one start with the Rangers last season, making 26 saves in a win over the Minnesota Wild on Nov. 9, 2023.

Domingue has made 143 appearances in his NHL career, playing for the Arizona CoyotesTampa Bay LightningCalgary Flames, and Pittsburgh Penguins. He has a career record of 60-60-10, a 3.02 goals-against average, a .905 save percentage, and two shutouts.

The vast number of players placed on waivers was quite the hike compared to Monday, where only 12 hit the wire, including those from the Colorado Avalanche, Oilers, Kings, Wild, San Jose Sharks, St. Louis Blues and Utah Hockey Club were made available. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, all players cleared.
