San Jose Sharks claim Barclay Goodrow off waivers

A veteran forward is heading back to where his career started.

On Wednesday, the San Jose Sharks claimed forward Barclay Goodrow off waivers from the New York Rangers.

Goodrow was originally placed on waivers by the New York Rangers on Tuesday after spending the last three seasons with the team. He has three more years remaining on his six-year contract, which he signed with the Rangers after having his rights traded from the Tampa Bay Lightning in July 2021. Goodrow’s deal carries a $3,641,667 cap hit through the end of the 2026-27 campaign. Across three seasons in New York, the Aurora, Ontario native scored 28 goals and 76 points in 240 games, including 10 points in 32 playoff appearances over that span.

The Rangers decided to place Goodrow on waivers to clear up cap space. If the 31-year-old did not clear, the team was likely to buy him out.

Instead, Goodrow returns to where it all started. The Sharks signed the undrafted forward in March 2014, and he spent the next five-plus seasons with the franchise. In 268 games with the Sharks, Goodrow scored 26 goals and 71 points. He played in 22 playoff games in San Jose, including the team’s run to the Western Conference Final in 2019.

The following season, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning at the trade deadline, and ended up being one of the depth pieces to help the club get over the hump. Goodrow and the Bolts went on to win the Stanley Cup in 2020 and 2021.

This past season, Goodrow registered just four goals and 12 points in 80 games, his lowest point total since the 2018-19 season with the Sharks. He did step up his game in the playoffs, scoring six goals and eight points as the Rangers made their way to the Eastern Conference Final, ultimately falling to the Florida Panthers.

In his 10-year career, Goodrow has played in 572 NHL games, scoring 60 goals and 109 assists, including 24 points in 97 playoff games.
