Kraken have started selling – so what’s next for Oleksiak and Tanev?

It’s been a lacklustre 2024-25 season for the Seattle Kraken, a team that came into the year with high playoff hopes, but now find themselves more than 10 points back of a Wild Card spot in Western conference and will miss the playoffs for the third time in four seasons.
Now the Kraken are sellers, moving forwards Yanni Gourde, Oliver Bjorkstrand, and a 2026 fifth-round pick from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for first-round picks in 2026 and 2027, Toronto’s second-rounder in 2025, and forward Mikey Eyssimont.
On Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss the Kraken’s latest moves, and if players like Jamie Oleksiak and Brandon Tanev could fetch a similar return.
Tyler Yaremchuk: We expected Gourde would be out the door, and Bjorkstrand was on Frank’s Trade Board and moved up a bit in recent weeks. Let’s talk about the two other names on your board in Seattle – Jamie Oleksiak and Brandon Tanev.
Does Ron Francis have the itch? Getting first-round picks is fun, let’s grab a few more. Is it a lock both these guys go or is that too aggressive of a word to use?
Frank Seravalli: I think lock is certainly the word to use for Tanev. I think Oleksiak is not nearly as much of a lock, but when you look at how thin this market is, and when you look at what Brian Dumoulin just got, I’m looking at this thinking, Dumoulin isn’t nearly as impactful as Oleksiak, and he doesn’t have term on his deal.
If you’re Seattle and someone is coming at you with a significantly better offer than that, I think you’ve got to do it. Oleksiak has the size to be that impact guy. Tanev is obviously going to be someone who is worth watching, and it’s developed in a way where Seattle’s not going to be in a position to say no.
