On Tuesday, the San Jose Sharks placed forward Will Smith on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. Also, the team activated forward Barclay Goodrow from IR.

Smith has been out of the lineup for the past few days, with head coach Ryan Warsofsky originally listing the former Boston College star as day-to-day last Friday. Smith last appeared in a game during the Sharks’ 8-1 loss at the hands of the Tampa Bay Lightning on Dec. 5. In that game, the 19-year-old registered a plus/minus of -3 with 15:50 of ice time, the most he played in the last six games.

It has been a bumpy start to Smith’s rookie season. While fellow freshman Macklin Celebrini has been making waves, it has taken Smith some time to find his footing. He did have a four-game point streak to end the month of November, scoring three goals and four assists over that span.

In 24 games, Smith has notched five goals and six assists for 11 points, with a -10 rating while averaging 14:13 of ice time.

Goodrow had been on IR with an upper-body injury since Nov. 28. He has missed San Jose’s last five games, in which the team went 3-2-0 over the time. In 25 games, the 31-year-old has scored just two goals, last finding the back of the net in the Sharks’ 4-3 shootout loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Nov. 11. Goodrow has a -10 rating while averaging 14:46 of ice time so far this year.

The Sharks (10-15-5) are seventh in the Pacific Division, seven points back of the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. They are set to visit the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night.
