The Calgary Flames will be active in free agency
The Calgary Flames have had a disappointing run since losing to the Edmonton Oilers in the second round of the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Over the past two seasons, Calgary has missed the postseason twice, finishing fifth in the Pacific Division.
Understandably so, as they navigate a rebuild or re-tool, the Flames have been sellers in the early NHL offseason.
They first traded goalie Jacob Markstrom to the New Jersey Devils for a first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and defenseman Kevin Bahl. Then, on Thursday during the NHL Awards, they traded forward Andrew Mangiapane to the Washington Capitals for a 2025 second-round pick.
They have some pending free agents, they have been in on the rumors surrounding some big names on the market and they are going to be active when free agency opens on July 1.
Tyler Yaremchuk: This [the Mangiapane trade] has obviously really sparked the Jake DeBrusk rumors in Calgary. Do you think Calgary will be active in the free-agent winger market with this money now off the books?
Frank Seravalli: Look, I’ve told you guys since March. Craig Conroy, I caught up with him at the general manager meetings. I do think they are going to be active, I don’t know that they are going to be necessarily 12:01 p.m. active on Canada Day on Monday. But I think they are going to be a team for sure that is trying to find value…
They need pieces to add to their lineup that are in the mid-range in average annual value. Think two-three-year deals, think $3-5 million a year. Maybe that’s a player that Jake DeBrusk falls into that category. If it’s maybe slightly north of $5 million and in that type of term range, I think that’s a player that would fit. The question is: Does someone step up before them and make it happen?
