The Utah Hockey Club announced Wednesday that is has signed forward Alex Kerfoot to a one-year extension. Per TSN’s Chris Johnston, the contract will carry a $3-million annual average value.

Through 61 appearances with Utah this season, Kerfoot has collected seven goals and nine assists for 16 points alongside 10 penalty minutes and a minus-12 rating. Kerfoot also leads all Utah forwards with 45 blocked shots.

“Alex is an important leader for our group with his versatility on the ice and leadership off the ice, and we look forward to having his continued contribution as we fight down the stretch to make the playoffs,” Utah general manager Bill Armstrong said in a statement.

Prior to the team’s shift to Utah, Kerfoot spent a single season with the Arizona Coyotes where through 82 outings in 2023-24 he finished with 13 goals and 32 assists for 45 points, six shy of his career-high 51-point effort with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2021-22.

Originally chosen by the New Jersey Devils in the fifth round of the 2012 NHL Draft, Kerfoot later entered the NHL during the 2017-18 campaign with the Colorado Avalanche. In all, through 585 career contests with the Avalanche, Maple Leafs, Coyotes, and Utah, Kerfoot has registered 94 goals and 186 assists for 280 points. The 30-year-old Vancouver product has also tallied six goals and 12 assists for 18 points through 48 appearances in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Kerfoot is the second contract extension announced by Utah this week as on Monday the team re-signed defenseman Olli Maatta to a three-year extension worth $10.5 million.

For Utah, the club sits 27-25-9 on the season and four points back of the Calgary Flames for the second wildcard position in the Western Conference. Having won six of its past 10 outings, Utah will look to keep up its winning ways when the team returns to the ice Thursday to take on the Detroit Red Wings.
