The Edmonton Oilers took the first big swing of NHL Trade Deadline week, acquiring forwards Trent Frederic and Max Jones from the Boston Bruins as part of a three-team trade with the New Jersey Devils.

In return, the Oilers had to give up prospects Shane Lachance and Max Wanner and a couple of picks to complete the deal. The best part, for Edmonton, is that they are only paying 25 percent of Frederic’s $2.3 million cap hit for the rest of the season.

The addition of Frederic gives the Oilers a little extra bite in their lineup. Frederic has shown the physical side of his game meshes well with the ability to score when given the chance.

While they’ve had Corey Perry since last season, having someone a little younger like Frederic might give Edmonton that needed grit to take home Lord Stanley’s Cup.

On Wednesday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk explained the impact that Frederic could have on the Oilers lineup.

Frank Seravalli: I love the different element that Trent Frederic brings. The best part about this deal, from an Edmonton perspective, is that they didn’t give up in terms of flexibility to do it…Go back to late February. I did a deadline playbook story on Trent Frederic…listed at the time [going] for a second-round pick, makes sense. It’s just that the other pieces you see here…those are pieces that you move to make the retention work.

What that means is–they haven’t boxed them off from doing anything else. They can still go out and spend Evander Kane’s money if they wanted to. They could not spend that money and have a small amount of cap space left…Point being, they got a player that filled a need without having to eliminate their potential options for later in the week.
