While most rosters experience some form of turnover, it feels like the two teams that make the Stanley Cup Final are due for the most turnover. Some of it is the nature of having a good team with good players that will need to be paid as such, and some of it is due to the experience that comes with a deep run like that boosting a player’s value on the open market.
Both the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers seem to be due for some turnover this offseason. The Oilers will probably look to move out some unwanted salary on their books, while the Panthers have 11 pending unrestricted free agents, including Sam Reinhart and Brandon Montour.
But which team will see the most turnover this offseason? Frank Seravalli gave his insight as to which of the two teams he thinks will make the most changes on Daily Faceoff Live.
Frank Seravalli: I’d say the Panthers probably look the most different of the two teams. You would think that they would find a way to work things out with Reinhart, but I think Florida is an interesting, sneaky destination for Jake Guentzel if they decide that Reinhart is too rich for them. How much of a drop off would there be if there’s no-state income tax? Could you even get Guentzel sub-$9 million? I think that’s a real possibility, and that’s obviously a really good team that you’d be plugging him into. How big is the drop off between Reinhart and Guentzel? Probably not much. So that’s an interesting one to watch.
What do they do with their defense core? They went a long way in terms of their style of play and properly balancing their defense. Like, they’ve gotten a ton out of some of these guys. It’s shocked me that no one’s been able to victimize Dmitry Kulikov yet so far in this postseason. Oliver Ekman-Larsson has been worth his weight in gold but probably due a bigger raise after the season that he had. Josh Mahura is a restricted free agent that should turn the corner after injuries. They’ve got a bunch of really fascinating decisions to make, but for the first time in a long time with some dead cap coming off the books, Bill Zito is going to have some options at his disposal, which is pretty big.
