Why it made sense for the Capitals to purchase CapFriendly

Yesterday, the Washington Capitals made shocking news by buying the well-known hockey website ‘CapFriendly’. In the statement of acquisition, the Capitals made it clear that the popular salary cap and armchair GM website would shut down in July.

Today on Daily Faceoff Live, Frank Seravalli chimes in on why it made sense for the Capitals to purchase CapFriendly.

Frank Seravalli: Well first off, it’s a sad day in the hockey world that we will see the closure of CapFriendly at the end of the month. This is a resource I have used 20-25 times a day, this is a resource for multiple teams, GMs, agents, players, and stakeholders of the game, that’s the go-to website. The two brains behind the whole operation Dominic Zerem and Jamie Davis have done such an unbelievable service to the hockey industry.

Frank Seravalli: So why does it make sense for the Capitals? First off, I don’t have all the details as things have been quiet. But if I’m looking at it from a Capitals perspective, it’s ‘how can I tap into these two brains of the guys who have done a wonderful job behind the scenes with CapFriendly.”The second part is that we (the Capitals) would need to shut the site down, that’s the best way to not only gain a competitive advantage over the other teams but also have that backend in that part of the world. The third part is how can we find a way to gain the trust of everyone. I think all of those things, you take those and smash it all together and it makes sense for the Caps. I am honestly shocked it has taken this long for someone to step up and do this.
