Alex Biega News
Biega is a 33-year-old veteran defenseman with 241 career NHL games under his belt. However, he was one of two defensemen that was recalled from the Marlies and it looks like he'll be the extra vs. the Blue Jackets.
The Red Wings acquired Biega from the Canucks back in October and has picked up three assists in 48 games in a Detroit uniform. With the Red Wings blueline beat up for the better part of the last month, Biega has averaged nearly 20 minutes per game.
Biega was sent down yesterday but quickly recalled because Danny DeKeyser was banged up vs. the Canucks. Biega or Madison Bowey could draw in for DeKeyser in Ottawa.
Biega appeared in two games with the Red Wings during his call-up but was a healthy scratch on Friday. Biega is expected to make his Grand Rapids Griffins debut on Wednesday.
Biega was acquired from the Canucks late on Sunday night and quickly gets recalled with both Trevor Daley and Jonathan Ericsson going on IR. Biega had 16 points (2G / 14A) and averaged 2.5 hits and 1.1 blocked shots per game in 41 games last year.
Biega was set to open the season in Utica (AHL) where he had two assists in three games last year. Biega has served as a No.6/No.7 defenseman for the Canucks over the last few seasons, posting a career-high with 16 points (2G / 14A) in 41 games last year. This trade suggests that Trevor Daley, who left Sunday’s game with an injury, could be sidelined for an extended period of time.
Biega has been a healthy scratch for the last two games but will replace Troy Stecher in the lineup on Thursday. Biega has four assists and 29 shots in 11 games this season.
Biega has two assists in three games with Utica so far this season. With Alex Edler and Chris Tanev getting banged up last night, Biega returns to the Canucks where he had nine points (1G / 8A) in 44 games a season ago.
With Erik Gudbranson set to miss the rest of the season, Biega will get back in the lineup for just the second time in eight games tonight. Biega has just six assists in 32 contests this season.
Biega has served as a seventh defenseman for the majority of the season, picking up just six assists in 31 games. The Canucks obviously like him as a depth defenseman and will keep him around for two more seasons.
Biega has been out of the lineup for the last four games but will replace Derrick Pouliot tonight in Washington. Biega has just five assists in 21 games this season.
Biega has appeared in one NHL and one AHL game this season, failing to record a point in each. Biega has picked up just eight points (1G / 7A) in 59 career NHL games. With Alex Edler out for at least one month, Biega is expected to draw into the lineup on Tuesday.
