Smith appeared in four games with the Avalanche this season, but returns to the Maple Leafs via waivers—he had six points (2G / 4A) in 16 games with Toronto last year.
Smith, 28, was with the Sharks and Maple Leafs last season, splitting time between both of their AHL and NHL squads. He finished the year with a total of six points (2G / 4A) in 22 NHL games and 16 points (12G / 4A) in 19 AHL contests. Smith will look to crack the Avs’ opening night roster in training camp.
Smith, 27, was acquired via trade from San Jose on February 27. He has split this season between the Sharks and Barracuda. The Avon, Connecticut native has skated in six games with the Sharks this season. In 14 games with the Barracuda, he has collected 10 points (eight goals, two assists). In 181 NHL games between San Jose and the Chicago Blackhawks, Smith has recorded 25 goals and 19 assists for 44 career points.
Smith was acquired from the Blackhawks last season, but only appeared in 19 games with the Sharks last season and six this season. He has picked up 10 points (8G / 2A) in 14 games with the Barracuda (AHL) and was likely only a part of the trade for salary purposes.
Smith cleared waivers on Thursday and has been sent to San Jose (AHL) this afternoon. Smith had no points and averaged just 5:59 TOI in six games with the Sharks this season.
Smith will play in his first NHL game since October 31st. He was out with an injury, then was with San Jose (AHL) on a conditioning stint and now will replace Joel Ward in the lineup tonight. Prior to getting hurt he had no points and a minus-1 rating in four games.

Smith suffered an undisclosed injury in Saturday’s loss to the Islanders. With Smith out, the Sharks have recalled Bryan Lerg, who will make his season debut tonight on the fourth line.
Smith, 25, has one more year on his deal with a $1.5M cap-hit. Smith is a physical two-way forward, who is a few years younger than Andrew Desjardins who went the other way. Smith had five goals and four assists in 61 games with Chicago.
Smith has not registered a single point since December 27th, so he will take a seat tonight vs. the Devils. With Smith coming out, Ryan Hartman will make his NHL debut.
Smith will skate on the Hawks third line with Brandon Saad and Andrew Shaw. He had a goal in his only game with Chicago last season and also netted 27 with 20 assists (47 points) in 54 games with the Rockford IceHogs (AHL).
Smith is now lost for the regular season and the playoffs. He scored two goals in 13 games with the Blackhawks this season.
Expect Smith to come back up after the break. He has two goals in 13 games, primarily playing on the fourth line.
Look for Smith to fill in on the third line. The rookie has two goals in nine games with the Blackhawks.
Smith is on a tear in the AHL with 12 goals and 21 points over 22 games. Look for him to add some depth to the Blackhawks forward corps.
