John Gibson News

Gibson will start the Ducks season opener in Vegas.

Gibson started 50-plus games for the third time in 2020 but set career-worts in GAA (3.00) and SV% (.904) behind a Ducks team that finished with the fifth-worst record in the NHL. Anaheim didn't too much to improve this offseason, so it could be a similar storyline in 2021 and he should especially be avoided tonight in Vegas. Gibson was 1-2-1 with a 4.48 GAA and .878 SV% in four games vs. the Golden Knights a season ago.

Gibson (groin) is expected to backup on Sunday.

Gibson left Friday's game in the third period with what Ducks GM Bob Murray called a "spasm in his groin." Murray added that Gibson is "not bad" but that he thinks they will "hold him out as backup" on Sunday. With Gibson backing up tonight, it seems possible that he's ready for their back-to-back on Tuesday (vs. OTT) and Wednesday (vs. STL).

Gibson allowed three goals on 32 shots in the Ducks win over the Oilers on Tuesday. Gibson has gone 3-3-2 with a 3.08 GAA and .901 SV% in the month of February. Tonight he faces the Penguins for the second time this season, he stopped 26 of 28 shots that he faced in a losing effort in the first meeting.

Gibson allowed six goals on 28 shots in the Ducks loss to the Golden Knights on Sunday. Gibson has lost five of his last six starts (1-3-2) while posting a 3.36 GAA and .893 SV%. The Ducks have struggled mightily in front of him, so it's probably wise to leave him on the bench against Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and the Oilers.

Gibson stopped 28 of 29 shots in the Ducks loss to the Avalanche on Friday. It was a great effort from Gibson, who has been solid recently, stopping 93 of the last 98 shots (.949 SV%) that he has faced. He’s gone 1-2-0 with a 4.04 GAA and .900 SV% in his first three starts against the Golden Knights this season.

Gibson will start Tuesday vs. the Blues.

Gibson allowed three goals on 27 shots in the Ducks loss in Montreal last Thursday. Since their bye week, Gibson has gone 2-2-1 with a 3.00 GAA and .892 SV% and draws a terrible matchup tonight with the Blues in town. Gibson is 1-1-0 while allowing just five goals on 72 shots (.931 SV%) in two games vs. St. Louis this season.

Gibson has gone 5-13-2 with a 3.36 GAA and .896 SV% in 20 road starts this season but draws a solid matchup in Ottawa. Since the Christmas break, the Senators have gone 2-6-6 while scoring just 2.57 goals per game.

Gibson starts Wednesday vs. the Coyotes.

Gibson allowed four goals on 31 shots in the Ducks loss in San Jose on Monday. Gibson has lost four of his last five outings while posting a 3.25 GAA and .899 SV%. Tonight he faces the Coyotes for the fourth time this season--he's gone 1-1-1 with a 2.62 GAA and .916 SV% in the first three meetings.

Gibson allowed two goals on 35 shots in the Ducks win in Nashville on January 16th. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Gibson, who is 1-1-0 with a 3.03 GAA and .915 SV% in two games against the Sharks this season. San Jose comes in on a three-game losing streak, scoring just four goals during that time.

Gibson surrendered four goals on 34 shots in the Ducks loss in St. Louis on Monday. Gibson has now lost six of his last seven games while posting a 3.41 GAA and .896 SV%. There's no denying that Gibson is as talented of a goalie as there is on this planet, but the Ducks team defense is among the worst in the NHL, making Gibson a risky option on any given night.

Gibson allowed four goals on 33 shots in the Ducks loss in Chicago on Saturday. It was the fourth time in five games that Gibson has allowed four goals, allowing a combined 18 goals on 161 shots (.888 SV%) over that span. The Ducks are just so porous defensively that Gibson barely stands a chance. He should be avoided in St. Louis, where the Blues have won eight straight while scoring 4.00 goals per game.
