Gillies and Tomas Tatar were added to the COVID-19 protocol list on Sunday while removing five players. Expect Gillies to be out until at least the middle of next week.
The Devils are worried about Jonathan Bernier's health, so they were looking for cheap goaltending help. Gillies showed he can handle the NHL in his season debut on Sunday, stopping 36 of 39 shots in a loss to the Ducks. The former third-round pick is 4-5-2 with a 2.72 GAA and .905 SV% in the NHL.
Gillies went 14-10-4 with a 2.69 GAA and .907 SV% in 30 AHL games with the Stockton Heat in 2020. Gillies is still just 26-years-old but will be headed to Springfield (AHL) to start 2021.
Gillies is joining the Flames in Detroit to serve as Mike Smith’s backup while David Rittich is nursing a lower-body injury. Gillies, who has 12 NHL appearances in his career, has gone 5-9-0 with a 4.07 GAA and .864 SV% in the AHL this season.
Gillies has gone 5-8-0 with a 3.96 GAA and .861 SV% in 18 games with Stockton this season. Gillies comes up to serve as David Rittich’s backup while Mike Smith is day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.
Gillies, 24, went 2-2-1 with a 2.78 GAA and .904 SV% in seven games with the Flames while Mike Smith (lower-body) was sidelined. With Smith set to return tonight, Gillies returns to Stockton where he has gone 14-12-2 with a 2.61 GAA and .915 SV% this season.

Despite a stretch of strong play from the 24-year-old, he will be in tough tonight in Pittsburgh—the Penguins are 24-8-1 on home-ice.
