Riikola suffered an upper-body injury midway through Tuesday's overtime win over the Capitals and is expected to miss an extended period of time. The Penguins' blueline is in trouble with Riikola, Mike Matheson and Marcus Pettersson all out for at least a couple of weeks.
Riikola, 25, came over the North America this season and served primarily as an extra defenseman for the Penguins. Riikola registered five points (2G / 3A) in 37 NHL games and added two assists in five games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL).
Riikola has been in the lineup for the last six games but will be replaced by Jamie Oleksiak on Friday. Riikola had one goal on 11 shots in those six games.
Riikola has been a healthy scratch for the last two games, but is expected to be back in the Penguins lineup on Monday. The rookie defenseman has failed to record a point while averaging 17:34 TOI/GM in his first six NHL games.
