Petr Mrazek News
Mrazek has been out since January 30th but he is expected to make a conditioning start with Chicago this afternoon before returning to the Hurricanes tonight. It's unclear how the Hurricanes will handle their three netminders since Alex Nedeljkovic has played very well while Mrazek was out.
Mrazek was hurt early in Saturday's game and underwent an MRI on Sunday. Head coach Rod Brind'Amour said that Mrazek is going "be a little longer than we had hoped" and added that he may need to have surgery. With Mrazek out, the Hurricanes will turn to a goaltending duo of James Reimer and Alex Nedeljkovic.
Mrazek was forced to leave Saturday's game vs. the Stars with an upper-body injury and will not be available for Sunday's rematch. Mrazek will undergo an MRI and will be re-evaluated on Monday, so expect a more detailed update on his status to come early next week. James Reimer will start Sunday.
Mrazek stopped all 32 shots that he faced in a 1-0 shutout win over the Lightning on Thursday. After 12 days off in between starts, Mrazek showed no signs of rust in an impressive win over the defending Stanley Cup Champions. Through three games, Mrazek has recorded two shutouts, for a 1.01 GAA and .955 SSV% overall. Tonight he'll face a Dallas team that has opened the season at 4-0-0 after a late start due to COVID-19.
In his second year in Carolina, Mrazek went 21-16-2 with a 2.69 GAA and .905 SV%. Mrazek will continue to split time with James Reimer in 2021 but Mrazek will start opening night vs. his former team. Mrazek was 2-0-0 while stopping 52 of 57 shots (.912 SV%) in two starts against the Red Wings in 2020.
Mrazek stopped 24 of 26 shots in the Hurricanes 3-2 win over the Rangers in Game 1. In typical Hurricanes fashion, Henrik Lundqvist was a lot busier in the first game of the series but Mrazek stood tall when he was called upon. Mrazek is now 6-5-0 with an .896 SV% in 12 career playoff games with the Hurricanes.
In his second season with the Hurricanes, Mrazek went 21-16-2 with a 2.69 GAA and .905 SV% in 38 starts. Despite the Hurricanes dominating the puck against the Rangers, Mrazek was 0-3 with a 3.44 GAA and .872 SV% in three starts vs. New York. During the 2019 postseason, Mrazek went 5-5 with a 2.73 GAA and .894 SV%.
Mrazek has missed the last six games with a concussion that he suffered in Toronto during the "Zamboni Driver Game." Prior to getting hurt, Mrazek was 2-3-0 with a 3.16 GAA and .904 SV% in the month of February. Tonight he returns to face his former team, who are on a two-game winning streak but are still 4-8-1 while scoring just 1.69 goals per game in their last 13 home games.

Hurricanes GM Don Waddell addressed the media on Tuesday and said Mrazek is at least one more week with a concussion. The Hurricanes have gone 0-2-1 while giving up 11 goals (3.67 GA/gm) since Mrazek and James Reimer got hurt.
Head coach Rod Brind'Amour met with the media on Monday and told reporters that none of their new injuries are "short term" and Mrazek is dealing with a concussion. With both Mrazek and James Reimer hurt, Alex Nedeljkovic and Anton Forsberg were recalled from Charlotte (AHL).
