Smith has been recalled from Chicago (AHL).

Smith was the 17th overall pick of the New Jersey Devils in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft but has had trouble establishing himself at the NHL level. The 24-year-old puck-moving defenseman has not played an NHL game since a nine-game stint with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2022-23 season.

The Hurricanes have signed Ty Smith to a one-year, two-way contract.

Carolina added to its defensive depth over the weekend as they signed 24-year-old offensive defenseman Ty Smith to a one-year, two-way contract. The puck-moving defenseman has 47 points in 123 career NHL games played but last appeared in the NHL with Pittsburgh all the way back in 2022-23. He spent all of 2023-24 with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL) and had nine goals and 43 points in 63 games played.

The Hurricanes have acquired Ty Smith and Jake Guentzel from the Penguins for Michael Bunting, Ville Koivunen, Vasili Ponomarev, Cruz Lucius, a conditional first-round pick and a conditional fifth-round pick.

Smith was a first-round pick (No.17 overall) in 2018 and made an early splash with the Devils, but did not have the same impact with the Penguins after being traded for John Marino in July 2022. Smith has spent the entire 2023-24 season in the AHL, where he had nine goals and 23 assists (32 points) in 51 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Pittsburgh has signed Ty Smith to a one-year contract worth $775,000 AAV.

Smith had a goal, three assists, 27 SOG, four PIMs and a +3 plus/minus through nine games with Pittsburgh in 2022-23 and has signed a one-year contract extension worth $775,000 AAV. The 23-year-old defensemen was originally acquired alongside a third-round pick from New Jersey in July of 2022 for John Marino. He has eight goals, 47 points and is a -32 plus/minus across 123 career NHL games played thus far.

Ty Smith has been reassigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL).

Smith had one goal, three assists, 27 SOG, and a +3 plus/minus through nine games but was reassigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL) after being a healthy scratch in each of the last two Penguin games. Smith heads back to the AHL for a second time, where he had four goals and 14 points through 26 games prior to his previous promotion.

Ty Smith will make his season debut Friday vs. New Jersey.

Smith was recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL) for the first time this season after scoring four goals, 10 assists, and 10 PIMs in 26 games. The 22-year-old has seven goals, 36 assists, and 146 SOG across 114 previous NHL games with the New Jersey Devils. He will see his first action as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins Friday when he draws into the lineup for an injured Kris Letang.

The Penguins have acquired Ty Smith and a 2023 third-round pick from the Devils for John Marino.

Smith was a first-round pick in 2018 and had a nice rookie season (2G / 21A in 48 games) but struggled in his second season. The move to Pittsburgh provides the Penguins with a little salary relief for this season and a defenseman with some untapped offensive potential. Swapping Marino for Smith is certainly a downgrade defensively for Pittsburgh.

Smith (undisclosed) will make his season debut on Saturday.

Smith missed the first three games of the season with an undisclosed injury that he suffered in training camp but will play Saturday vs. the Sabres. Smith, who had 23 points (2G / 21A) in 48 games last season, will replace Christian Jaros in the lineup and skate on pairing with Damon Severson.

Smith (lower-body) was placed on IR but is questionable to play in the Devils season opener.

Smith is battling an undisclosed lower-body injury that landed him on IR on Monday but he remains eligible to play in the season opener if he's healthy enough. The Devils don't start their season until Friday, so keep an eye on Smith's status throughout the week.
