This is poor timing because the Penguins depleted their blueline depth on Monday, trading Jamie Oleksiak to the Stars.
Kukan was in the lineup for three of the last four games but will sit on Sunday with Ryan Murray returning from a one-game absence.
Aston-Reese was presumably hurt during a fight with Colton Sceviour on Tuesday and will miss at least a week of time after landing on IR. The Penguins recalled Garrett Wilson from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL) to take his roster spot.
Gillies is joining the Flames in Detroit to serve as Mike Smith’s backup while David Rittich is nursing a lower-body injury. Gillies, who has 12 NHL appearances in his career, has gone 5-9-0 with a 4.07 GAA and .864 SV% in the AHL this season.
Gillies has gone 5-8-0 with a 3.96 GAA and .861 SV% in 18 games with Stockton this season. Gillies comes up to serve as David Rittich’s backup while Mike Smith is day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.
Kuraly has played in all 23 games so far this season but is expected to be replaced by Anders Bjork on Monday. Kuraly has just four points (1G / 3A), 38 shots and 15 PIMS this season.
van Riemsdyk has missed the last 16 games with a lower-body injury that he suffered in the second game of the season. van Riemsdyk had one assist in his first two games and returns on the third line and first power-play unit against a Devils team that is giving up the third most goals against in the NHL.
van Riemsdyk continues to skate with the Flyers, but won’t play on Tuesday. van Riemsdyk has not ruled out a possible return on Thursday, so monitor his status during the morning skate.
van Riemsdyk joined the Flyers morning skate in a regular jersey, suggesting he has been cleared for contact. van Riemsdyk won’t play on Thursday and is unlikely for Saturday, but could be back some time next week.
Kukan has been a healthy scratch for the the last six games, but will play for the first time since October 23rd. Kukan has no points and is averaging 12:13 TOI/GM in five games this season. Kukan replaces Scott Harrington.
van Riemsdyk has been out since October 6th and is just two and a half weeks into a 5-to-6 week timetable. Returning to the ice is an important step in the right direction for JVR, who could be back in early-November if everything goes well.
Gambrell had two goals and one assist in his season debut with the Barracuda before being called-up following Joe Thornton’s move to IR. With the Sharks off until Thursday, Gambrell could just head down to get some AHL games and return before their meeting with the Sabres.
