Montreal Victoire sign Abby Boreen to three-year contract

A rather stunning announcement out of Quebec.
On Friday, the Montreal Victoire of the PWHL announced they have signed forward Abby Boreen to a three-year standard player agreement (SPA). The contract will carry through the 2026-27 season.

What is strange about the signing is that last season, Boreen was a reserve player for the Minnesota Frost, only able to play on a part-time schedule due to her educational pursuits at the University of Minnesota, where she played five seasons.
Per the league’s rules, Boreen was required to re-enter the PWHL Draft back in June and was taken by the Victoire in the third round, 17th overall. There was a lot of behind-the-scenes talk that the 24-year-old wasn’t pleased with the selection, as she wanted to stay in Minnesota. However, sources say there were no trade conversations between Montreal general manager Danièle Sauvageau and new Frost GM Melissa Caruso.
With the league’s second season set to begin next month, Boreen seemed to have made her decision to stay with the team that drafted her.
“I am grateful and excited to be joining Montréal’s organization,” Boreen said in a release. “I am looking forward to this new journey in my life and having the opportunity to play in front of such a passionate fanbase. I can’t wait to continue to grow the game that has given me so much.”
“We are extremely happy to have concluded this agreement with training camp right around the corner,” Sauvageau said. “Because of her experience in our league, we already knew what Abby could bring to our team when we selected her in June. The energy and fierceness she brings to the ice will most certainly please our fans.”
Across her two 10-day contracts during the regular season with the Frost, Boreen scored four goals and five points. She was then eligible to play in Minnesota’s semifinal series against the Toronto Sceptres, notching one assist in the five games, as the Frost moved on to beat the Boston Fleet to win the inaugural Walter Cup.
With the signing, the Victoire has 19 of a possible 23 players signed to SPAs for the upcoming season. With training camp just around the corner, Sauvageau and head coach Kori Cheverie have some decisions to make on how to fill the rest of the roster.
