NHL power rankings: Are the Ottawa Senators actually going to make the playoffs?

What a bizarre week or so it’s been in the NHL. Multiple players got into car accidents. Evgeni Malkin was robbed. Connor McDavid became bloodthirsty during a game. J.T. Miller nearly got traded. And I didn’t hate on the Winnipeg Jets this week. What world are we living in right now? What life-altering events are happening, let’s say, today, that have created this mess?

Oh no. Oh dear god. We did not just rank the Capitals first on today of all days. Welp!

Hunter Crowther and I continue to navigate through the results so far this season with another week of our co-op power rankings. I have my same old system in which I aggregate six stats (points %, 5-on-5 goal differential, 5-on-5 xGF/60, 5-on-5 xGA/60, power play xGF/60, and shorthanded xGA/60, all coming courtesy of Natural Stat Trick) to come up with a list that eliminates my own biases, along with a rule that no team can be above a team that’s more than five points ahead of them in the standings, regardless of where the aggregate places them. On the other hand, Hunter goes off his own intellect and pure vibes, and together we find a way to combine it and meet in the middle.

1. Washington Capitals

Record: 31-10-5, +50
Last Week: 2nd (+1)
Hunter’s Rank: 1st
Scott’s Rank: 1st

Scott: The Capitals are currently rocking a four-game win streak, a 10-game point streak and have gone 8-1-3 since Alex Ovechkin returned (who surprisingly “only” has six goals in the 12 games). All is well in Washington right now (ON THE ICE), and it seems like Hunter and I agree on that.

2. Edmonton Oilers

Record: 29-14-3, +25
Last Week: 4th (+2)
Hunter’s Rank: 2nd
Scott’s Rank: 2nd

Hunter: Going into Saturday’s game against the Canucks, the Oilers had nine wins in their last 10 games, and Leon Draisaitl was playing arguably the best hockey of his career with seven goals and 14 points in that span. Not only that, but Evan Bouchard is looking more like the guy who was a horse on Edmonton’s blueline last spring, firing bombs from the point and taking lessons from the University of Al MacInnis. Their loss to Vancouver was a tough one, and it looks like Connor McDavid will receive supplemental discipline, but at the same time, if someone is going to wrestle the best player in the world and the refs won’t call a penalty, I don’t mind said best player taking matters into his own hands.

Scott: I feel like you almost have to give McDavid a game at this point. I don’t have a problem with what happened with Conor Garland considering that the refs didn’t help him out, but McDavid already had eyes on him from the elbow on Marcus Johansson earlier this week. That feels too close together to let him get away with it twice.

Hunter: I don’t think McDavid even cares if he misses a game or two. Let’s say he gets one game, he’ll have to forfeit more than $150,000. I think he’s reached a point in his career where if he’s not going to get the respect of the officials that superstars in other sports receive, then he’ll happily take what equates to a six-figure fine to get his point across. The game has long evolved past Mark Messier creating space by throwing elbows, but if McDavid feels like he needs to cross-check someone in the mouth, so be it.

Scott: Eat a game or two, teach ‘em a lesson. I can get down with that.

3. Winnipeg Jets

Record: 31-13-3, +52
Last Week: 5th (+2)
Hunter’s Rank: 3rd
Scott’s Rank: 4th

Hunter: Each week, Scott and I do our little Bert and Ernie routine where he rails against the Jets, and I wax poetic about them. This week, I want to focus on one person: Gabe Vilardi. A key part of the Pierre-Luc Dubois trade, Vilardi missed nearly half of last season with a slew of injuries, but still finished with 22 goals and 36 points in 47 games. This season, in the same amount of games, he’s tied his career high mark of 41 points and has thrived on Winnipeg’s top line and the power play. I love watching good players evolve into really good ones, and that’s what we’re seeing with Vilardi.

Scott: I will agree with you about this on the Jets: I also have really liked Vilardi on the Jets. He never got the opportunities or the linemates in Los Angeles that he has in Winnipeg, and he’s made the most of it so far.

4. Vegas Golden Knights

Record: 29-14-3, +29
Last Week: 1st (-3)
Hunter’s Rank: 4th
Scott’s Rank: 3rd

Hunter: Usually I’d say something like, “The Golden Knights are a good enough team that a three-game losing streak doesn’t concern me,” and that’s exactly what I’m going to say: a three-game losing streak doesn’t concern me. They outplayed both the Blackhawks and Hurricanes, and even when starting with a 4-0 deficit against the Predators, the Golden Knights were the better team. Expect them to get back on track when they host the Blues on Monday.

5. Dallas Stars

Record: 29-16-1, +33
Last Week: 7th (+2)
Hunter’s Rank: 6th
Scott’s Rank: 5th

Scott: The Stars have been rolling with Evgenii Dadonov on their top line alongside their struggling star in Jason Robertson, and it seems to be working. Robertson has eight goals and 19 points in 13 games since doing so, and even their other struggling star in Wyatt Johnston has six points in three-plus games since joining that line with Roope Hintz going down with an injury in their 4-1 win over the Leafs. If they can finally get more out of those two going into the playoffs, this team is looking great.

6. New Jersey Devils

Record: 26-17-6, +23
Last Week: 3rd (-3)
Hunter’s Rank: 5th
Scott’s Rank: 7th

Scott: This Devils team is really struggling. They’ve now lost nine of their last 11 games, and it isn’t only bad luck, as they’ve been quite inconsistent with their play as well. Take Sunday’s 2-1 loss to the Sens, where they came out flying in the first, and then just let Ottawa take over for the final two periods. At the very least, the goaltending hasn’t been the problem, so they don’t have to worry about that part of their game, but they may need a scoring winger at the deadline. With Simon Nemec recently voicing his displeasure about playing in the AHL, you have to wonder what kind of player he could fetch the Devils just on his own.

Hunter: I’ve seen a fair amount of Devils games this season, and there were stretches this week against the Leafs and Senators where I thought, “that doesn’t look familiar.” Scott’s right in that they need a forward up front, and you’d have to think Nemec could be at the center of a deal. But right now, they need guys not named Hughes or Bratt or Hischier to produce.

7. Toronto Maple Leafs

Record: 29-16-2, +13
Last Week: 8th (+1)
Hunter’s Rank: 7th
Scott’s Rank: 9th

Hunter: I thought the Leafs looked much better last week, even with the loss to the Stars and the horrid start against the Canadiens over the weekend. Auston Matthews looks like his old self, with seven goals and 12 points in his last eight games. He’s got 18 goals with 35 games to go; could he hit the 40-goal mark? In John Tavares’ absence, it was nice to see Bobby McMann get some extra minutes and take advantage of them with a goal against Montreal, as this team will need all the secondary scoring it can get.

Scott: Stephen Burtch pointed out an interesting trend about the Leafs on Saturday: Oliver Ekman-Larsson has played much better this season on his left side than when he’s been forced onto the right side. Considering the fact that the Leafs are only playing him on the right to try and fit Simon Benoit into the lineup, who’s easily been their worst defenseman this season, it’s an even more baffling decision that Craig Berube has been making. After that post, OEL probably played one of his best games as a Leaf against the Habs, and he was playing on the left side…

Hunter: It’s almost like trading away Timothy Liljegren and hurting their depth on the right side was a mistake?

Scott: Well so far their backup plans to Liljegren have been playing OEL on his off side to play Benoit, banking on Jani Hakanpaa’s knee, or circling back on John Klingberg and banking on his hip. I’m very curious to see what they do about this at the trade deadline.

8. Los Angeles Kings

Record: 25-13-5, +23
Last Week: 10th (+2)
Hunter’s Rank: 13th
Scott’s Rank: 6th

Scott: The Kings had a four-game road trip to forget while going on the northwest trip, losing three of the four games, and the one win coming against a Canucks team that is going through their own struggles. I think I’d be more concerned about the fact that they scored three goals in those three losses, especially when offense was already their biggest concern. With another first-round matchup against the Oilers seemingly on the horizon, L.A. doesn’t need to completely outgun them, but they will need another weapon or two if they want to finally beat Edmonton.

Hunter: By God, that’s Drew Doughty’s music!

9. Minnesota Wild

Record: 27-15-4, +4
Last Week: 6th (-3)
Hunter’s Rank: 8th
Scott’s Rank: 12th

Hunter: I had Kirill Kaprizov high on my midseason Hart Trophy ballot, but it feels like he’s missed enough games that he won’t get top-three votes. It’s impressive the Wild were able to win six of the first eight games he missed, but since then, they’ve lost three straight, including a stinker  to the Predators over the weekend. Filip Gustavsson and Marc-Andre Fleury have been arguably the best netminding tandem in the league, but injuries to Kaprizov, Jonas Brodin and Jared Spurgeon are catching up to Minnesota.

10. Carolina Hurricanes

Record: 27-16-3, +23
Last Week: 9th (-1)
Hunter’s Rank: 12th
Scott’s Rank: 8th

Hunter: I can’t really get a read on the Hurricanes. You get strong production from the likes of Marty Necas and Seth Jarvis, and consistent goaltending from Pyotr Kochetkov in just his third full NHL season. But then you get one goal from Sebastian Aho in January, and losses against teams like the Ducks and Sabres. It feels like they’ve been aimless for more than a month. Carolina will make the playoffs on talent alone, but something’s missing. Really curious to see if they go out and make another Jake Guentzel-level move at the deadline.

11. Florida Panthers

Record: 27-17-3, +11
Last Week: 11th (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 9th
Scott’s Rank: 11th

Scott: It’s the same story every week with the Panthers. They’ve been playing well enough to keep their heads well above water and will make the playoffs without any doubt. While their on-ice play hasn’t been super consistent, they’ve still shown that they turn it on when they need to and remind us why they won the Stanley Cup last year. My only question is whether they’ve been playing with the on-off switch too much to nail it down come April, but I’m still not super concerned.

12. Tampa Bay Lightning

Record: 25-16-3, +39
Last Week: 13th (+1)
Hunter’s Rank: 10th
Scott’s Rank: 10th

Scott: The Lightning have won three of their last four games, but it was their one loss that was the most notable story of the week. Brayden Point was a healthy scratch due to missing a team meeting, and his absence was clearly felt (he’s only tied for second in goals after all) as Tampa lost 6-2 to the Bruins. There wasn’t even too much to this story, it’s quite common in sports and is a way to hold your players accountable, but considering that the Bolts haven’t completely pulled away from the Wildcard race (that the Bruins are also in), that might come back to haunt them if they’re a point or two shy of the playoffs.

13. Colorado Avalanche

Record: 28-18-1, +12
Last Week: 12th (-1)
Hunter’s Rank: 11th
Scott’s Rank: 13th

Hunter: Nathan MacKinnon continues to dominate and Mikko Rantanen is inflating his value more and more and Cale Makar is breaking records and blah blah blah blah blah, we get it, they’ve got some studs. But after the top three, it’s a steep fall down. Before Casey Mittelstadt had a three-point night on Saturday, he had just two goals and 13 points in his previous 36 games. Two goals. Artturi Lehkonen has 18 goals but his 23 percent shooting percentage is well above his career average of 11.2. They need at least one more forward if they want to make a run in the spring.

14. Columbus Blue Jackets

Record: 22-17-7, +1
Last Week: 15th (+1)
Hunter’s Rank: 14th
Scott’s Rank: 15th

Hunter: If you’re reading this, you likely have a favorite hockey team. Everyone does, even those who report on the game, or pretend that they’re too cool to have a favorite. But if you’re looking for a second team, might I suggest the Blue Jackets? A team filled with youth, timely scoring and a Norris-Trophy-bordering-on-Hart-Trophy-level blueliner in Zach Werenski, they’re fun to watch each night. Not to mention, their Stadium Series sweaters are the nicest I’ve seen in years and will look even better in March at Ohio Stadium.

Scott: They also have just been one of the best stories considering what happened to them last summer. If you think of me as a cold-hearted stats guy, just know that I do have soul and really want to see this team make the playoffs.

15. Boston Bruins

Record: 22-19-6, -23
Last Week: 16th (+1)
Hunter’s Rank: 16th
Scott’s Rank: 14th

Scott: Talk about having a break at the wrong time. The Bruins finally snapped their six-game losing streak with back-to-back wins over two opponents they needed wins against in this Atlantic Division race in the Lightning and Panthers… and then they had a three-day break. It wasn’t a massive break, but Boston came out of it on Saturday and blew a two-goal lead in the final 3.5 minutes of the game to lose in overtime to the Sens. More teams keep climbing over them in the Wildcard race, and the Rangers are right behind them and starting to figure things out.

Hunter: If you would have told me before the season that sometime in January, the only teams worse than the Bruins in the Atlantic would be the Red Wings and Sabres, I’d think: “Damn, the Sabres just can’t get it together, can they?” But then I’d ask: what happened to Boston?

16. Ottawa Senators

Record: 24-18-4, +5
Last Week: 21st (+5)
Hunter’s Rank: 15th
Scott’s Rank: 17th

Hunter: Winners of five of their last six, the Senators are in a playoff spot in January: I repeat, the Senators are in a playoff spot in January. Tim Stutzle continues to produce at an elite level, and despite going pointless in his last seven games, Brady Tkachuk is still generating lots of shots and is never a minus when he’s on the ice. How about Leevi Merilainen coming out of nowhere and stepping up for a club with injuries in the crease, almost never giving up the last goal and keeping Ottawa in the fight? Sometimes it ain’t pretty, but Al Davis said it best: just win baby, win.

Scott: That sounds like me when I was forced to play goalie in floor hockey this week. Except we didn’t win. But I only allowed four goals so it wasn’t my fault either!

Hunter: Take some responsibility, Maxwell!!!

Scott: I’m sorry, when one goal was an own goal, one was a breakaway, and the other two were slot shots where the shooter had several seconds to pick their shot. Besides, it also means that I’m a better goalie than Steven Ellis.

Hunter: Well that’s not that hard, is it?

17. New York Rangers

Record: 22-20-4, -8
Last Week: 20th (+3)
Hunter’s Rank: 19th
Scott’s Rank: 16th

Scott: Are the Rangers back? They’ve got a 6-1-3 record in their last 10 games and are only three points out of a playoff spot, so things are certainly starting to look better. They still have a few things to figure out, but I never really thought they were dead in the water at any point either, and now they add another interesting piece to this Eastern Conference playoff puzzle that seems to be developing for the final stretch.

Hunter: As the keeper of the “We Are So Back O’Meter,” I can tell you that the Rangers are, indeed, not quite back … yet. It’s been a rollercoaster, and I’m impressed they went from top of the league to just a few points out of the basement to back in the fight for a playoff spot. You just know Chris Drury is going to make another big trade, whether it’s for J.T. Miller or for someone we’re not even thinking about.

Scott: Who gave you the “We Are So Back O’Meter”?

18. Calgary Flames

Record: 22-16-7, -12
Last Week: 18th (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 17th
Scott’s Rank: 19th

Scott: I hate to keep using the Flames blurb to go on and on about Dustin Wolf, but he keeps showing us why he’s important to this team’s playoff chances. So here’s a stat for you: the Flames have only won one game with Wolf in net where he’s posted a save percentage lower than .917. ONE WIN! That isn’t even a league average save percentage like it was 10 years ago, the Flames need borderline elite play from Wolf to get wins with how low-scoring their offense is. There’s a massive list of Hart Trophy candidates that will get more attention, but he deserves a vote or two if the Flames do make the playoffs.

19. Vancouver Canucks

Record: 20-15-10, -14
Last Week: 17th (-2)
Hunter’s Rank: 18th
Scott’s Rank: 21st

Hunter: It’s amazing how the Canucks were one win away from the Western Conference Final last spring, and now they’re about to trade the guy who led the team in scoring for both the regular season and playoffs. We’ve all watched J.T. Miller’s shifts against the Kings, as if it was the Zapruder film, and now it seems like it’s a foregone conclusion that he’s gone. That’s a mistake. I hate to pull the, “they’re being paid millions to play a children’s game,” but damn it, they’re being paid millions to play a children’s game. How this situation reached this point baffles me, and what’s most frustrating is that we’ll likely never know how it got here. Just rip the band-aid off and trade him to the Rangers.

Scott: Considering the fact that the Rangers are willing to move pretty much any defenseman not named Adam Fox right now, getting K’Andre Miller back as a return for J.T. Miller would certainly be making the most out of a bad situation, especially since the Canucks need another puck-moving defenseman.

Hunter: Quinn Hughes deserves so much better.

20. Pittsburgh Penguins

Record: 19-21-8, -36
Last Week: 14th (-6)
Hunter’s Rank: 23rd
Scott’s Rank: 18th

Scott: Yeah, yeah, yeah, the Penguins have struggled with eight losses in their last 10 games, Alex Nedeljkovic scored the goalie goal that we all knew he was going to score at some point, but we don’t care right now. What do you think the deal is with this story about Evgeni Malkin’s Stanley Cup rings getting stolen, and then not stolen? Did he just lose them and blame it on the robbers? Did the robbers steal them and then felt bad and returned them? Did Malkin make up that the rings were stolen? I’m so intrigued here.

Hunter: I’m not one to speculate, but this is my tinfoil hat conspiracy theory: the robbers stole the rings and various items, but when they went to whatever third party to pawn them off, they learned the rings held no value because, well, they were a national news story and they’re almost impossible to sell. What’s the market for stolen championship rings beyond the wealthiest of sports sickos? If they couldn’t sell them, they figured it wasn’t worth the hassle.

21. Montreal Canadiens

Record: 23-19-4, -13
Last Week: 23rd (+2)
Hunter’s Rank: 21st
Scott’s Rank: 24th

Hunter: Speaking purely as a hockey fan, it’s been a treat watching the Canadiens string together some wins. Considering how far they’ve come, and how they played in the first period of their Saturday contest against the Leafs, you can understand why Montreal fans were high-handed and overripe on social media. Who could blame them? But there are snakes that go months without eating, then they finally catch something, but they are so hungry, they suffocate while eating. Same thing happens to hockey teams when you choke a three-goal lead to your archrival. One game at a time, fellas.

Scott: I was very close to posting something after the first period of Saturday’s game about how the Habs and Leafs have had similar numbers since the Habs started their run in November. I’m really glad that I didn’t.

22. St. Louis Blues

Record: 22-21-4, -6
Last Week: 25th (+3)
Hunter’s Rank: 24th
Scott’s Rank: 22nd

Scott: Can the Blues stop hanging around the playoff race so that I can stop pretending to be interested in them? Any sign of a coaching bump under Jim Montgomery is gone since they have a 13-9-3 record under him, and they haven’t won more than two games in a row all season. No seriously, they’ve won back-to-back games eight times this season but have never won three in a row this season. To slightly adjust a quote from my former power rankings colleague, “It’s the Blues, who cares?”

Hunter: I so badly want to push against Scott on this, mostly because I have some weird affinity with the Blues since childhood because I liked their jerseys, but it’s not worth it. Robert Thomas is a joy to watch and Dylan Holloway has really stepped up, but they don’t have the juice. Maybe Jordan Binnington will go off at the 4 Nations and revert to his 2019 self, then catapult St. Louis into a playoff spot.

Scott: Let Binnington fight someone this season, and then maybe I’ll give the Blues some more credit.

23. Detroit Red Wings

Record: 21-21-4, -19
Last Week: 22nd (-1)
Hunter’s Rank: 20th
Scott’s Rank: 26th

Scott: Well, pretending the Red Wings were a playoff threat after the coaching change was fun while it lasted. Detroit had their seven-game winning streak snapped to start the week by the Sharks of all teams, and then after bouncing back with a win over the Panthers, they lost both of their games over the weekend against the Lightning and Stars by a combined score of 9-2. They’ve certainly improved under Todd McLellan, but they still need a lot of work done on this roster if they want to seriously contend for the playoffs.

24. Utah Hockey Club

Record: 19-19-7, -10
Last Week: 24th (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 27th
Scott’s Rank: 20th

Hunter: It’s a shame that Utah has been so terrible in the last month, because we’re seeing great performances out of Clayton Keller and Logan Cooley and I’d like to see how they would perform in the spring. With 10 losses in their last 13 games, Utah is still only six points out of a playoff spot, but that path is a lot harder with four virtual playoff locks in their division.

25. New York Islanders

Record: 18-10-7, -16
Last Week: 19th (-6)
Hunter’s Rank: 22nd
Scott’s Rank: 25th

Scott: I think I’ve believed in this Islanders team more than most Islanders fans at this point, but even that three-game winning streak last week didn’t do too much to their playoff chances. Considering the fact that Lou Lamoriello has believed in this team more than Charlie Brown believed that Lucy van Pelt wouldn’t move that damn football the next time he went for the kick, they probably need to start moving on from some pieces at the deadline.

26. Philadelphia Flyers

Record: 21-20-6, -15
Last Week: 26th (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 25th
Scott’s Rank: 23rd

Hunter: It’s time for another addition of “The We’re So Back Meter.” In today’s episode, it’s the Flyers — a team that had lost four straight to start 2025 and was well on their way to the bottom of the league standings. But with four wins in their last five games, the team is red hot. Travis Konecny had a three-assist performance against the Islanders and Matvei Michkov is playing like a Calder Trophy winner in a universe with no Macklin Celebrini and Lane Hutson. I repeat: we are so back.

Scott: EH-HEM!… no Celebrini, Hutson OR Dustin Wolf!

Hunter: I’m Dustin Wolf. I solve problems.

27. Nashville Predators

Record: 16-22-7, -24
Last Week: 29th (+2)
Hunter’s Rank: 26th
Scott’s Rank: 27th

Scott: I hadn’t looked too closely at the Predators’ underlying numbers recently, but they’ve actually started to turn things around a bit. They’re 12th in 5v5 xGF/60, 18th in 5v5 xGA/60, 16th in PP xGF/60 and 3rd in PK xGA/60. That’s still quite middling, but it at least means that they shouldn’t be as bad as they are right now. Of course, that doesn’t solve the larger existential crisis in Nashville, and that’s that even at their best, they can’t escape mediocrity, especially after all the money they spent last summer.

28. Buffalo Sabres

Record: 17-23-5, -15
Last Week: 28th (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 29th
Scott’s Rank: 28th

Scott: I’ve got bad news for the Sabres: you have one week to figure things out. Things have been as bad as they are, and they still haven’t faced the full force of Buffalo sports fans because the Bills have been distracting them. Well, they play the Chiefs next week, and you know the Bills will find a way to blow that, so once they’re done playing, it’s all eyes on the Sabres.

29. Seattle Kraken

Record: 20-24-3, -13
Last Week: 30th (+1)
Hunter’s Rank: 28th
Scott’s Rank: 30th

Hunter: For the first half of the season, I thought the Kraken were a decent team with a good goalie that a new coach in Dan Bylsma could squeeze some offense out of. But now three weeks into 2025, I can finally say it: they’re bad. Chandler Stephenson was a well-intentioned signing, but he’s not good enough to carry this team offensively. Their defense gets burned too often in their own end. Start thinking beyond Yanni Gourde: who else can this team move on from?

30. Anaheim Ducks

Record: 18-22-6, -34
Last Week: 27th (-3)
Hunter’s Rank: 30th
Scott’s Rank: 29th

Hunter: A few weeks ago, I defended the Ducks’ record and said at least they worked hard and were fun to watch. But it’s been a brutal start to the new year. Take away Cutter Gauthier’s two goals against the Hurricanes last week, and he has no goals in his last 10. When is Trevor Zegres supposed to be back? Better question: why would he want to?

31. Chicago Blackhawks

Record: 15-28-3, -38
Last Week: 32nd (+1)
Hunter’s Rank: 32nd
Scott’s Rank: 31st

Hunter: Going into Saturday night, the Blackhawks lost 10 of their last 12 games, and what was already a dire situation got worse and worse. But over the weekend, Seth Jones had a three-point night and Todd Bertuzzi scored a pair, and they beat one of the league’s juggernauts in the Golden Knights. Take your happy moments when you can, and figure out who you’re taking with the top-three pick you end up with in June.

32. San Jose Sharks

Record: 14-28-6, -47
Last Week: 31st (-1)
Hunter’s Rank: 31st
Scott’s Rank: 32nd

Scott: Outside of the vibes, there isn’t too much of a difference between the Blackhawks and the Sharks at this point. They’re both only points away from each other in the standings, and even under the hood, the only reason I have the Blackhawks slightly higher than the Sharks is because of their special teams play. Otherwise, they’re both bad, but not to an embarrassing degree either. It should make for a fun tank battle down the stretch.
