Joni Pitkanen News

The Carolina Hurricanes have announced that defenseman Joni Pitkanen will miss the entire 2013-14 season.

Pitkanen, suffered a broken left calcaneus (heel) bone on April 2 against Washington, and missed the Hurricanes’ final 13 games of the season. The 2013-14 season would have been his sixth with Carolina and 10th in the NHL. He has scored 57 goals and earned 225 assists in 535 career NHL regular-season games with Philadelphia, Edmonton and Carolina, since beginning his NHL career in 2003-04.

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Joni Pitkanen suffered a season-ending broken heel bone when he crashed into the boards on an icing touch-up. He was taken off the ice on a stretcher after crashing leg-first into the boards while racing the Washington Capitals' Troy Brouwer for the puck. He was not taken to the hospital, but the team said Wednesday that he will be out 10 to 12 weeks.

Drop Pitkanen with him being out for the year. Newcomer Marc-Andre Bergeron and Joe Corvo will likely be leaned on more heavily for production from the blueline in the absence of Pitkanen.

Head coach Kirk Muller said Tuomo Ruutu and Joni Pitkanen will travel with the #Canes this weekend.

Pitkanen hasn't played since March 2nd because of a lower-body injury. He practiced fully today and took part in power-play drills so there is a good chance he returns to the Hurricanes blueline tomorrow.

Pitkanen may be able to play tomorrow Muller says.

Pitkanen has missed the Hurricanes last two contests but appears as if he could be ready to play tomorrow. Monitor his status tomorrow for a more accurate report on whether or not he will be in the lineup. He has 1 G and 5 A in 12 games this season.

While the defenseman won't play tonight against the St. Louis Blues and still may be another week or so away from getting back in the lineup, he was glad to be back on the ice with his teammates and coaches.

Pitkanen gets back into his first practice since getting hurt which is a great sign. Limited to only 21 games this season, Pitkanen has three goals and 12 points.

Rutherford says D Joni Pitkanen (concussion/knee surgery) likely out until first week of March.

The March timeline likely is regarding his knee injury as Pitkanen still remains out indefinitely with a concussion. The former 4th overall pick has three goals and 12 points through 21 games but should not be owned in single-season leagues right now.

@B_Low_ He is still recovering from the puck to the face, but it's not too serious. Pitkanen will be out another couple of weeks, at least.

Pitkanen last played on December 6th due to a concussion. He was deemed out indefinitely at the time. If you don't have an available roster spot for him, it's likely safe to drop him and keep an eye on the Finnish dman in February.

Per team press release, Joni Pitkanen will be out an additional four weeks with knee surgery.
